After 25 years of teaching in the Primary sector I have finally been able to graduate to high school. What a shock to the system. I not only moved to teenagerville, but I took up a position in the learning support area. This was not going to be any ordinary secondary school teaching experience.
We now have 21st Century learners who are desperately needing a reason to stay engaged and a reason to try hard at high school.
I had to rethink it all.
I needed to make a difference. I wanted to find my place in this high school and make a positive impact in their lives.
The first thing I had to conquer was the stigma attached to being in the learning support unit. Their mindset had to be looked at. Part of that was making the inside of the classroom an inviting place to be. So my Primary school flare kicked in tadaa!! an inviting classroom environment. Now I needed to think about the lesson plans. These students would simply not turn up to class if they didn't want to. They needed to have a reason to come and to want to learn.
Student Ownership. I wanted the students to see the big picture. To have a learning journey profile which they could personally track and be proud of. I wanted them to look at it ask me to teach them something they saw in it.
